Children’s therapy

At Thrive Counseling Kirkland, we are here to help your child reach their potential. Life comes with a variety of challenges and traumas: Bullying, divorce, moving, going through school, navigating friendships, and developmental milestones are just a few places that your child finds themselves working through.

Our children therapists are trained to help your child understand and make sense of their emotions, to help them process their worlds. The world is a big place to a child and sometimes it feels too big and/or too confusing. Sometimes even scary. By having a place to process and talk about daily life events to traumatic events, safety is created and a place where your child does not have to figure out

Your child’s behavior has a reason behind it. We want to partner with your kiddo to help them process any trauma, communicate their emotions and help them walk into who they are. Your child is unique and they are a delight, we want them to experience the full expanse of who they are. When we have unresolved issues or past traumas, we present with anxiety, depression, undesirable behaviors and acting out.

Your child could benefit from therapy if:

  • Feelings of sadness, anxiety, being worried, and/or withdrawn are pervasive.

  • Having anger outbursts.

  • No longer enjoying activities and hobbies they once did.

  • Engaging in harmful behaviors (i.e. cutting, etc)

  • Changes in sleeping and eating habits.

  • Abusing alcohol or drugs

  • Changes in school performance.

  • Talking about harming themselves or others.

  • Expressing that they don’t belong anywhere

Through therapy your child has a place where they can find hope again, learn tools to help them walk through their experiences with greater confidence and clarity and learn to manage and express the full range of their emotions.

What does counseling for children look like?

Counseling is tailored individually to your child and where they are at. Some children are talkative and ready to engage in conversation. Other children do not have the words or know how to express what they are experiencing, so they act out through unwanted behaviors or withdraw. This is where play therapy is beneficial, through the use of play and/or art the therapist is able to have a window into the kids’ world and begin to help them put language to what they are experiencing. Play therapy is a bridge that helps address and resolve what is bothering kids.

Parenting is hard. Parenting is the hardest job you will ever undertake. Most parents experience difficulties raising children. It can feel defeating and frustrating to deal with a child’s outbursts, defiant behaviors or even struggle with how to reach a child who has withdrawn. You do not have to do this alone. We are here to help. Counseling can benefit all families, through having an outside perspective and new sets of tools is enormously beneficial. We believe that your child is a delight and that there is a lot of time for your child to develop into wholeness and health. Counseling for children is a foundation for healthy adulthood.

It is hard to see your child struggle. We understand that struggle and are here to help resolve anxiety depression, or any other emotional difficulties that they may be experiencing. We are here to be your partner in bringing wholeness to your child.
