Get to know me:

I'm Matthew Hesselgrave, a mental health coach here at Thrive Counseling Kirkland specializing in supporting individuals with bipolar disorder and ADHD. My qualifications are significantly shaped by my own experiences: 46 years of navigating ADHD and 25 years of successfully managing bipolar type 2. This lived experience provides me with a deep understanding of the challenges involved and what it truly takes to live a fulfilling life despite these conditions.

My passion is to partner with clients throughout their bipolar journey. I offer a listening ear, guidance, and practical life skills to help them find clarity and establish a positive path forward. I firmly believe that a bipolar diagnosis is not a defining limit, and that beyond the difficulties, there is hope, recovery, and goodness to be discovered.

Similarly, I understand that living with ADHD can be both confusing and frustrating, yet it often brings unique strengths. With effective management, the energy associated with ADHD can be channeled into remarkable creative and productive achievements, leading to a satisfying life. Developing new skills and building a supportive network are key to this management, and I would be honored to be a part of that support team.

On a personal note, I've been happily married to my wife, Jennifer, for over 34 years. We have three adult children and two-beloved granddaughters. My interests include reading, hiking, camping, woodworking, and enjoying quality time with friends over good food and wine. I am also a man of faith and am actively involved in my faith community.

When you work with me, we’ll take a personalized, strengths-based approach to living well with ADHD and/or bipolar disorder. Together, we’ll focus on building the life you want—one rooted in clarity, purpose, and hope. Here’s what that journey includes:

  1. Understanding Your Diagnosis with Compassion

We’ll explore what it means to live with ADHD and/or bipolar disorder—without judgment. I’ll help you make sense of your experiences, clarify what your diagnosis means for you, and begin building a renewed sense of hope and possibility.

  2. Strengthening Self-Management and Self-Care

Together, we’ll develop practical strategies and daily routines that support emotional regulation, energy balance, focus, and rest. You’ll learn how to manage your symptoms while also caring for your whole self—mind, body, and spirit.

  3. Creating a Strong, Supportive Network

You don’t have to walk this road alone. I’ll support you in identifying, growing, and maintaining healthy relationships and systems of support—whether that’s family, friends, professionals, or peers.

  4. Empowering You to Lead in Your Own Care

I’ll help you take an active and informed role in your care planning. You’ll learn how to advocate for yourself, communicate effectively with providers, and make decisions that align with your goals and values.

  5. Moving Beyond the Illness Narrative

You are not your diagnosis. We’ll shift the focus from what’s “wrong” to what’s strong—recognizing your strengths, potential, and capacity to thrive. Our conversations will center on recovery, growth, and resilience—not just symptoms.

  6. Reclaiming and Redefining Your Identity

Together, we’ll explore your values, passions, and strengths so you can reconnect with who you are beyond mental health labels. You’ll begin to rediscover a sense of purpose and personal identity that reflects the whole you.

  7. Encouraging Community Connection and Participation

Feeling connected is essential to well-being. I’ll help you identify meaningful ways to engage in your community—whether through work, volunteerism, hobbies, or relationships—so you feel a sense of belonging and contribution.

  8. Creating a Meaningful and Fulfilling Life

Ultimately, our work is about building a life that feels satisfying, joyful, and meaningful to you. We’ll clarify what that looks like, set achievable goals, and take consistent steps toward your personal vision of well-being.
